My name is Shae McMullin, I’m a graphic designer and illustrator from Edmonton Alberta. I found my passion for illustration and design when pursuing an entirely different career at another school, I haven’t looked back since my first 2d design class (sorry animation). I love to use UXD theories and practices in my design work beyond just UI, user experience is the priority in my projects. When I’m not designing you can find me reading, embroidering, playing d&d, or being mediocre at cooking.
Maxine Miles Podcast Cover and Instagram Graphics
For this project I created the cover image and social media graphics for the Atypical Artists show Maxine Miles, a YA mystery podcast distributed by iHeartPodcast.
For the cover, I illustrated the background and created the custom typography for the title. The goal was to communicate the genre of the show and for it to be scalable.
For the promo graphics, I combined physical assets with illustrations and designs to create the protagonist’s “murder board”.

Anne of Green Gables EBook Research Project
This project was done as part of an independent study course researching eBook design. I designed and illustrated a print version of my chosen book and researched attitudes and habits around eBooks. I then learned how to use InDesign to reformat my book into an eBook that is thoughtfully designed with regard to typography and illustration while still offering the accessibility of an eBook.

Designing the Search Experience (SewSearch)
The goal of this project was to design the search functionality of a content aggregate site. I designed SewSearch as a tool for sewists to find patterns that fit their needs, style, and budget. I created a content model, comparative analysis, and conducted user testing. I mocked up the home page, search results, and destination pages to illustrate the user’s journey through the search experience.

City of Edmonton Compost School Signage
This project was in partnership with the City’s Compost School site as a part of the capstone course.
I conducted ethnographic research, a design workshop, interviews, a visual analysis, and user testing in order to identify what information needed to be shared and how best to do so. I illustrated and designed the signs with particular care for their scannability and visibility.
“The Perfect Compost” sign. This explains the best ways to maintain your home compost bin and what can be put in it.
“Maintaining Your Compost” and “Using Your Compost” signs. These signs go together to explain several of the practicalities of home composting.
“No Yard? No Problem” sign and “What is Composting?” sign. The first sign was created to try to widen the current Compost School audience, by communicating options for composting in apartments, we can address a new potential group of patrons.
The second sign is an easy introduction to the scientific process of home composting and some of the language used throughout the site.
“Grow More & Do Less. Uncompost!” sign. This sign consolidates different methods of home composting that aren’t as well known and are often even easier than choosing not to compost. By highlighting the ease and application of these methods, Compost School is able to reach new patrons.
