Independent Project
Biome Balance is a board game that aims to increase children aged 10-12’s understanding of conservation and awareness of the environmental threats and challenges facing the Central Parkland ecological subregion. The project has maintained a strong focus on creating educational tools that foster learning, inspire curiosity, and motivate children to understand and take concrete conservation actions in their daily lives to help preserve the Central Parkland.
The game board represents the Central Parkland through individual tiles, each depicting one of the game's biomes. The use of masked imagery, colour overlays, and centrally placed icons creates a cohesive system that helps players easily recognize and navigate the four biomes.
Each question card back represents one of the four biomes in the game, with a visual system that aligns with the game board, making them easy to understand and identify.
The question cards integrate each visual component, the iconography, colours, textures, and shapes, each carefully selected to engage children.
The character cards introduce role-based gameplay, allowing each player to take on an identity as they try to restore Central Parkland. This addition adds excitement and fosters real-world connections.
The threat cards diverge from the primary colour palette by incorporating red tones to reinforce the environmental threat. Despite this shift, the cards remain visually connected through the continuation of the iconography systems and background shapes.
