Reframing Genealogy: Capturing and Sustaining the Interest of a Younger Audience

Community Partner
Alberta Genealogy Society Edmonton Branch

Working in collaboration with the Alberta Genealogy Society Edmonton Branch, this capstone project involved creating various visual communication materials to promote family history research to a younger audience and to help shift perceptions, presenting it as an engaging and beneficial activity. Insights from in-depth research highlighted the need for a modern, visually engaging approach to capture the attention of the younger demographic effectively. These insights informed the creation of an informational guidebook for new members to the society, a promotional campaign, and social media posts and ads.

Using various patterns and archival imagery, I took a collage-based approach to establish a scrapbook-style system of visuals to be used across the touchpoints.
To support new members of the society, I created a refreshed guidebook containing helpful information, including additional resources, membership perks, and a "getting started" guide. Engaging layouts and clear typography were utilized to bolster interest and prevent confusion.
The "getting started" spread provides helpful information guiding new members as they begin their family history research journey.
Traditional billboard and poster ads were created for the built environment.
Research supported a social-media-based approach for the promotional materials. Motion ads for social media platforms such as Instagram were created to quickly capture the attention of the younger demographic.
Social media post templates with a carousel format allow for information sharing while also enabling the community partner to update and manage content independently in the future.
