Moonwise

Independent Project

Self-directed project.

I am studying how hormonal health information is communicated to young women. While there is a growing body of research on women’s hormonal and menstrual health, existing resources are often perceived as confusing, inaccessible, stigmatized, or difficult to apply to everyday life. Prior research and user insights reveal a gap not in the availability of information, but in how that information is delivered, interpreted, and emotionally received. Design can play a critical role in this context by translating complex hormonal concepts into clear, relatable, and emotionally safe communication through thoughtful tone, structure, and format, helping young women better understand their bodies and feel empowered to engage with their hormonal health. Moonwise is a care kit that provides women with the different resources they need to understand their bodies and support their hormonal health.

Moonwise is a holistic care kit designed to help educate young women about their bodies and hormones, so they can support their health and feel empowered. The kit includes a handbook, journal, recipe cards, and herbal tea.
The kit's branding is characterized by softness and friendliness through its colourful palette and fuzzy graphics. The use of these graphics is limited to maintain a clean, professional look while being cozy and approachable.
The handbook educates the user on hormones and their role in our bodies and everyday life. Chapters range from menstruation to food, sleep, and exercise, providing a more well-rounded, relatable scope of information. At the end of the book is a glossary to help the user understand the material, along with references for those wanting to do further research on their body.

The journal is a two-part book: the first part diligently teaches the user how to use the second, which consists of the journal’s fillable pages. It’s undated for the user to use as they like. It consists of a habit tracker at the start of each month, followed by a month in review page, which is for the users to fill out every day or at the end of the month to see if there are any correlations and a semi-filled bingo page that users can fill with things they would like to or expect to achieve that month.
Each week takes up two spreads, the first is the daily cycle and symptom tracking pages with a little section for a workout plan for the week, and the second is a notes and a week check-in page - these check-ins utilize the 3-2-1 method to let the viewer reflect on their week and grow with intention.
The recipe cards provide a self-standing deck of cards for ease of use and deliver 12 recipes, categorized into the four phases of the menstrual cycle (colour-coded). Each phase provides one sweet, one savoury and one drink recipe. Each recipe card includes a “cycle support” section that explains why that recipe supports the user's body during the phase for which it was designed.
