Intent: What It Means To Design

Independent Project

“Intent: What It Means To Design” is a feature-length documentary exploring what it means to be a designer. Spanning across Edmonton and Calgary, six people working in or around design sit down and discuss their personal journeys into design, some of the difficulties and misconceptions, and what design means to them. This film acts as a tiny window into the huge field that is design, and explores how it can mean different things to different people.

Shannon Lanigan, Co-Founder and Director of Design Talks Calgary, speaks about her work with designers and the importance of a broader understanding and recognition of design.
Chris Reyes, Creative Director at ZGM, explains his difficult path into the design field, and also how fulfilling it has been as a career choice.
Dennis Lenarduzzi, former Creative Director and current Sessional Instructor at MacEwan University, discusses some of the misconceptions surrounding the design field, as well as what he sees as universal aspects of practicing design.
Danijela Zutic, Assistant Professor at MacEwan University, uses her background in art history to explain where design comes from, and where it may be heading in the future.
Priya Ramesh, one of the organizers of the BUMP music festival, explains how design and public art can transform a city, and can bring communities together.
Max Amerongen, a trained industrial and motion designer who works in municipal politics, speaks about the importance designers have in their local communities and the ethical considerations of the profession.
Shown off here is the trailer for the film, with release coming across Edmonton and Calgary later in 2026.
