they/them
Hi! I’m August Schaffler. I’ve been working in the design industry part-time for four years, and I’m excited to finally graduate and be able to work on real-world design projects full-time! I originally went into the design program because I’ve always loved illustration, and grew to love design even more when I realized it can be used to create connections and community. For me, design is about the people I get to collaborate with. I love seeing clients’ excitement (and occasionally happy tears) when they get to see the final project we’ve been working together on.
Projects
Let Trans Kids Thrive
This was a research-based illustration where the goal was to refute common stereotypes. Transgender children have been a topic of debate in media lately, so I wanted to create an illustration that would show love and understanding towards them. Butterflies are a common motif of transformation used by the transgender community, so I drew the children as butterflies. I used blue, white, and pink throughout the image as a reference to the transgender flag.
Sandbox Virtual Convention
This project was a virtual convention concept I came up with to encourage women and LGBTQIA2S+ people to explore game design. Sandbox is a reference to a genre of video game that encourages a high level of player creation and control. The convention would occur entirely online, with virtual panels and a central Discord server to keep participants connected. I wanted the brand identity bright and welcoming to keep the event engaging in a virtual space.
Mad Scientist Character Illustration
This was a character design illustration project. I developed a zombie mad scientist character that tests their experiments out on themselves. I included windows installed on the side of their head and stomach so they’re always able to check out how their experiments are affecting their organs.
