My name is Ashlee and I grew up on a small acreage outside of Vermilion, Alberta. My mother was an artist and her passion for art inspired me to do the same thing with my life. In regards to my work - my inspiration comes from the world around me. I love nature, I love people, and I love history. I try to highlight aspects of each of these within my work. My goal as a designer is to work from home and build my own freelancing business, however, I’m open to any opportunity that comes my way right now! Over the pandemic, I learned how to bake! You should try my cinnamon rolls - they’re pretty awesome.

Contrast

Contrast is all about showcasing women and their natural beauty. My goal for this photoshoot was to completely avoid any retouching, and depend on my light sources to show how beautiful each woman is. I decided to stick to black and white to further extend the narrative of stripping away any other elements other than the women photographed and their natural beauty.

Missing and Murdered

Missing and Murdered is a rotoscope animation made to create awareness about the missing Indigenous women who have tragically lost their lives or dignity. Every element of this animation has meaning.

Conceptual Illustration: The New Yorker

The goal of this project was to create a scene that describes what Thanksgiving in New York looks like, and apply the illustration to a mockup cover page of the New Yorker. My intention behind this illustration was to show how different Thanksgiving would be in 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the colours used are bright and cheery, this is contrasted by the stark reality of the scene.

Whistler of the North

This is an illustration of my favourite bird. The Whistler of the North, or the yellow throated sparrow. They’re a common songbird in Alberta, but their song stands out among other sparrows because of it’s melancholic tune.
